Technology
What is Microposite siding made from?
Microposite siding uses a patented closed-cell technology which results in a lightweight, water resistant and highly insulative product. The product is made from perlite (80%), which is a naturally mined mineral that is frequently used in building materials such as drywall, beams and columns, combined with urethane resins (15%) and fiberglass (5%).
Why does water wicking and moisture absorption cause so much damage?
It is no secret that there is a groundswell of concern regarding moisture penetration into exterior siding products and the problems this causes. Water intrusion is considered public enemy number one. It can lead to many serious problems from rot and decay to mildew and mold. Several previous siding product failures were directly related to water absorption which led to widespread rot and decay of the siding structure. Eventually, many of those products had to be taken off the market. Microposite Siding Products are water resistant. Microposite's patented closed-cell composite structure eliminates water penetration, providing you with the water resistance you should expect and demand in a siding product.
Does this product contain any carcinogens or other harmful substances?
No, Microposite contains no hazardous materials.
Have these products been tested by independent labs and/or the ICC?
Microposite Siding Products have been submitted for evaluation by the International Code Council (ICC). At this time, we cannot predict when we will receive our final product evaluation report.
Is this an environmentally friendly product?
Microposite is environmentally friendly. It's manufactured using a low energy, self-curing process. This patented technology allows for R-Values higher than most other siding products on the market. Microposite Siding Products don't contain any harmful substances. Additonally, the lightweight product allows for more product per truckload which means more efficient distribution.
What does ‘R-Value' mean and why is it important?
The R(Resistance)-Value of a material indicates its resistance to heat flow and its effectiveness as an insulator against conduction. R-Values are commonly used to characterize thermal insulation materials in homes and buildings. R-Value is an important factor when considering the purchase of a siding product. Products with a higher R-Value provide greater insulative properties and reduce the energy costs of cooling and heating a home.
What are the R-Values for other wood alternatives?
Microposite's R-Value is 3.5 times higher than fiber cement and 1.5 times higher than wood which means our technology creates a product that is very energy efficient
Installation
For complete installation and finishing instructions, refer to the Microposite Installation Instructions.
Are special tools or fasteners required for installation?
Because of its patented technology and closed-cell design, Microposite Siding Products are easily cut using a variety of standard installation tools and blades. Microposite produces no harmful substances when cutting. Whether you are cutting, drilling, or routing―the end result is a crisp, clean edge. To install, common fasteners such as 6D (6 penny) siding nail or an 11ga roofing nail are recommended. Nails must be corrosion resistant, galvanized (preferably hot dipped), or stainless steel to provide maximum service life and to prevent rust bleed.
How do I install Microposite siding?
Microposite Siding Products can be hand or pneumatically fastened. Pneumatic fastening is recommended. No pre-drilling is required even if product is installed in low temperatures. Please refer to
Microposite Installation Instructions for full details.
Do you require a weather resistant barrier behind Microposite siding?
As a better building practice, Microposite recommends the use of a weather resistive barrier to enhance the performance of the exterior envelop. In all cases, refer to local building codes for requirements on the use of weather resistive barriers.
Can I blind nail? Edge nail? When is face nailing required?
Microposite Siding Products can be blind or face nailed in accordance with our published Installation Instructions. In general terms, blind nail applications conceal the fasteners for a more aesthetically pleasing result. Face nail applications are typically reserved for severe high wind conditions. Refer to published wind load tables or confer with an authorized Microposite representative with questions regarding specific application. Microposite board may be fastened to within 3/8" from the edge.
What types of trim can be used with Microposite siding?
Any durable trim product can be used in conjunction with Microposite siding. Leave a 1/8" gap between Microposite boards and all trim, windows, and doors for easement. All gaps must be sealed, caulked, or flashed in a manner that prevents moisture intrusion or buildup. Trim should be thick enough such that the siding does not extend beyond the face of the trim. For 7/16" Microposite board, we recommend using a minimum 5/4" nominal width trim (1" true width).
Do I need to prime Microposite siding?
No. Microposite comes ready for applying the final color coat. For long term durability concerns, please consult your paint supplier for their recommendations on the number of coats needed to ensure long term performance.
Do I need to paint Microposite siding?
Yes Microposite Siding Products must have a finish coat applied within 180 days of installation. Use high quality acrylic latex finishes only.
How often will I have to re-paint my home?
